MR Conditional What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is this 26-inch bariatric wheelchair fully MR Conditional for use around a 3T scanner?

Yes. This wheelchair is MR Conditional for 3T MRI environments and built from non-magnetic components that remain stable around the magnet. Facilities use it safely throughout MRI Zones II–IV because it doesn’t pull toward the magnet and doesn’t interfere with imaging when handled under standard MR Conditional procedures. The clear MR labeling on the back also helps techs verify status quickly during busy shifts.

2. When would an MRI department choose a 26-inch bariatric wheelchair instead of a 22" or 24" model?

A 26" wheelchair provides extra width and stability for patients who need more seated room or tend to shift their weight during transport. Many outpatient centers keep one wider chair on hand for patients who don’t comfortably fit standard MRI wheelchairs. It prevents pressure points, reduces leaning, and gives staff better control during transfers—especially important when moving a patient toward the table or ramp.

3. How do the flip-up arms and removable footrests help with MRI table transfers?

The flip-up arms open the entire side of the chair, giving staff a clear path for lateral transfers. Bariatric and mobility-restricted patients often need more space, so having both arms move out of the way reduces awkward angles and keeps body-mechanics safer for the techs. The footrests come off cleanly, which helps you square the chair closer to the bore and reduces tripping hazards during high-weight transfers.

4. Is this 26-inch bariatric MRI wheelchair stable enough for heavier patients who lean or shift during transport?

Yes. The reinforced frame, under-seat cross-brace, thicker upholstery, and wide 26" seat make the chair feel grounded even when patients rely heavily on the armrests. The pneumatic-style wheels roll smoothly over thresholds and hallway transitions, which helps keep movement controlled when transporting a patient who can’t assist with repositioning or weight shifting.

5. What kind of maintenance does a wide 26” bariatric MRI wheelchair need in a high-volume imaging center?

Daily cleaning is simple—standard hospital disinfectants are fine for the non-magnetic materials. Most departments do weekly checks on the wheel bearings, arm hinges, and footrest mounts. Because it’s non-folding and built for higher weight, the frame tends to stay aligned longer than typical transport chairs. The 5-year frame warranty gives facilities plenty of runway before major service is usually needed.
