MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How does the MagnaCoil Headset improve patient comfort and communication during MRI scans?

The MagnaCoil Headset is designed to reduce scanner noise by up to 30 dB, helping patients stay calm and comfortable throughout the procedure. It also works with compatible MagnaPlugs to deliver clear audio or music directly into the patient’s ear canal, allowing technologists to communicate instructions or provide reassurance. This combination of noise reduction and audio clarity helps improve scan quality by minimizing patient movement.

2. How much hearing protection does the MagnaCoil Headset actually provide?

The headset carries an NRR of 30 dB, which is one of the highest levels of passive hearing protection used in MRI. It helps reduce exposure to gradient-noise peaks during sequences while giving patients a more comfortable scanning experience. Many facilities use these headsets as a first-line solution for both adult and pediatric exams.

3. How should the MagnaCoil Headset be cleaned and maintained between patients?

For routine cleaning, technologists can wipe down the headset with approved non-alcohol disinfectants or mild hospital-grade cleaners. Disposable ear inserts or MagnaPlugs are recommended for each patient to maintain hygiene and prevent cross-contamination. Regular visual inspection for wear or cable strain ensures consistent acoustic performance and helps extend headset life.

4. Is the MagnaCoil Headset compatible with MRI communication systems?

It works well alongside pneumatic MR audio systems, patient-comfort accessories, and most standard table setups. Its low-profile shape avoids coil interference, and the non-magnetic construction keeps it safe around head coils, neuro coils, and pediatric set-ups.

5. What does it mean that the MagnaCoil Headset is MR Safe?

The headset is labeled MR Safe, which means it contains no known hazards for use in any MRI environment, including Zone IV and inside the bore. There’s no metal, no conductive components, and nothing that can interact with static, gradient, or RF fields. It’s a fully non-magnetic hearing-protection option your team can use right at the table without needing to remove or swap gear.
