MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do MagnaPlugs Standard work with MRI headsets during scans?

MagnaPlugs Standard connects directly to MagnaCoil headsets and other MRI sound systems to deliver music and voice through soft, disposable ear inserts. Each pair seals the ear canal for effective noise control while maintaining clear communication from the control room. This helps patients relax and ensures technologists can communicate clearly without sacrificing noise protection or scan quality.

2. How often should MagnaPlugs be replaced in clinical use?

For infection control and consistent acoustic performance, MagnaPlugs are single-patient use items and should be replaced after each exam. Many imaging departments order bulk quantities to keep workflow smooth and avoid downtime between patients. Using fresh plugs for every scan also helps maintain accurate sound transmission and ensures the full 30 dB of noise reduction.

3. What’s the difference between MagnaPlugs Standard and MagnaPlugs Mini?

Both models offer the same 30 dB Noise Reduction Rating, but the Standard version has a slightly larger ear insert that fits most adult patients comfortably. The Mini version is slimmer and often preferred for pediatric or small-ear applications. Facilities that serve a wide patient mix typically stock both to guarantee a secure, comfortable fit for every scan.

4. What makes MagnaPlugs Standard a good choice for MRI hearing protection?

MagnaPlugs are designed specifically for MRI environments, using non-magnetic materials and a 30 dB NRR rating to help reduce scanner noise. They fit comfortably under most head coils and work well alongside MRI-safe headsets when you need layered protection. Facilities often use them during louder gradient sequences or when patients are sensitive to noise.
