MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do these prescription MRI glasses improve workflow and patient cooperation?

Because the lenses can be swapped in seconds, technologists can quickly match each patient’s prescription without needing separate eyewear. That means fewer setup delays and better scan compliance from patients who rely on corrective lenses. The stable fit and fog-resistant design also help minimize head motion, which translates to cleaner images and fewer repeat scans.

2. Can these be used across different imaging suites or just MRI?

They’re designed for cross-modality use — not just MRI, but also fMRI, MEG, PET, EEG, and TMS. Facilities with hybrid or research environments use them to keep optical correction consistent across sessions, ensuring reliable results and simplified patient setup no matter the modality.

3. How should imaging teams manage lens changes and cleaning between sessions?

Each lens is etched with its diopter strength, so it’s easy to identify and track. The thumbscrew design means no tools are needed to change lenses between patients. After use, staff can wipe the frame and lenses with standard hospital disinfectant or mild soap and water — the non-metallic build tolerates frequent cleaning without clouding or corrosion.
