MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do Child MediGlasses help pediatric patients during MRI or fMRI scans?

These glasses let children see clearly and comfortably inside the MRI scanner without introducing any metal artifacts or image distortion. The interchangeable prescription lenses—ranging from -5 to +3 diopters—help correct vision so young patients can focus naturally, which reduces anxiety, head motion, and the need for repeat scans. The lightweight, cushioned frame is designed specifically for smaller faces, keeping kids calm and still during longer imaging sessions.

2. Are the Child MediGlasses safe for use in high-field MRI environments?

Yes. The MediGlasses are made entirely of non-metallic, non-conductive materials and are labeled for safe use in MRI systems up to 7 Tesla, as well as fMRI, MEG, PET, EEG, and TMS. Their plastic frame and silicone pads eliminate magnetic interaction or signal interference, ensuring accurate imaging across multiple modalities. This makes them a trusted option for pediatric research centers and hospitals running high-field studies.

3. What’s included in the Child MediGlasses set, and how should facilities maintain them?

Each set comes with 18 or 34 lenses, a labeled storage case, vision chart, and cleaning kit. The lenses are easy to swap using the built-in thumbscrew system, so technologists can quickly adjust prescription strength between patients. After each use, simply wipe the frame and lenses with hospital-approved disinfectant and dry with the included microfiber cloth to maintain clarity and hygiene.
