MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is the 15° Wedge safe to use in MRI environments?

Yes. The 15° Wedge is made from non-magnetic, non-conductive materials and is MR Conditional, meaning it’s safe for use in MRI Zones III and IV, including inside the scan room at 1.5T and 3T. It’s designed to stay stable during active scanning without creating image distortion or safety concerns.

2. What is the 15° Wedge used for during MRI procedures?

This wedge is used to position and support patients at a precise 15-degree angle, helping technologists achieve consistent imaging geometry and patient comfort. It’s often used under the knees, arms, or shoulders to relieve pressure points and improve scan reproducibility across MRI, CT, and Ultrasound studies.

3. Why would I choose a 15° wedge instead of another positioning aid?

A 15° wedge provides gentle, controlled elevation that’s ideal for maintaining patient comfort during long scans or fine-tuning positioning for targeted anatomy. Compared to flat blocks or steeper wedges, it offers a balanced angle—useful for spinal, abdominal, and extremity imaging where subtle positioning changes make a difference in image quality.

4. Is this wedge compatible with other imaging systems?

Yes. Although designed for MRI use, the 15° Wedge can also be used safely in CT, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, and general positioning. Its lightweight, non-magnetic construction makes it easy to handle and dependable across different imaging environments.

5. How should the wedge be cleaned between patients?

Wipe the wedge with standard hospital-approved disinfectants, such as alcohol-based or quaternary ammonium cleaners. Avoid bleach or abrasive pads that could damage the surface. Routine cleaning after each use helps maintain hygiene and extend the wedge’s lifespan in clinical settings.
