MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can the 16° Wedge be used safely inside the MRI suite?

Yes. The 16° Wedge is constructed from non-magnetic, non-conductive materials and is MR Conditional, suitable for use in MRI Zones III and IV, including the scanner room. It performs safely at 1.5T and 3T field strengths without creating image artifacts or affecting scan performance.

2. What is the purpose of the 16° Wedge in MRI positioning?

The wedge helps elevate and stabilize specific body areas—like the knees, shoulders, or arms—during MRI exams. Its 16-degree incline allows for controlled patient alignment, which improves comfort and helps technologists achieve consistent, high-quality images.

3. How does the 16° Wedge differ from other positioning wedges?

Compared to flatter or steeper wedges, the 16° angle provides a moderate lift ideal for fine-tuned positioning. It’s especially useful in studies where a small angle adjustment improves imaging access or patient comfort, such as musculoskeletal, abdominal, or spinal scans.

4. Is this wedge compatible with other imaging systems besides MRI?

Yes. The 16° Wedge can also be used in CT, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, and general positioning. Its durable, non-metallic materials ensure reliability across different imaging environments without safety concerns or interference.

5. How should the wedge be cleaned between patient uses?

Clean with approved hospital disinfectants such as alcohol-based or quaternary ammonium solutions. Avoid bleach or harsh scrubbing tools to prevent surface damage. Regular cleaning supports infection control and keeps the wedge in service longer.
