MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can the 18.75° Wedge be used safely inside the MRI suite?

Yes. The 18.75° Wedge is made from non-conductive, non-metallic materials suitable for use in MRI Zones III and IV. It meets ASTM F2503 requirements and is labeled MR Conditional for use at standard clinical field strengths—typically 1.5 T and 3 T. Always verify the labeling on your specific unit to confirm the approved MRI operating conditions.

2. What is the purpose of an 18.75° wedge in MRI positioning?

This wedge provides angled support that helps maintain proper limb or body alignment during imaging. The 18.75° incline helps reduce muscle tension and pressure points, improving patient comfort and reducing motion artifacts. It’s often used for joint, spine, or lower extremity positioning when precise elevation is needed for image clarity.

3. What imaging modalities can this wedge be used with?

The 18.75° Wedge is designed for multi-modality use, including MRI, CT, Ultrasound, and Nuclear Medicine. It integrates easily with other MRI Med positioning aids, allowing technologists to standardize patient setup across different scanners and procedures for consistent, reproducible results.

4. How is the 18.75° Wedge constructed, and how should it be cleaned?

Each wedge is made from medical-grade, high-density foam with a sealed surface that resists fluids and disinfectants. It’s easy to clean between patients using hospital-approved agents such as quaternary ammonium or alcohol-based wipes. Avoid bleach or harsh abrasives to preserve the material and ensure long-term durability.

5. How does the 18.75° Wedge compare to other MRI positioning aids?

Unlike standard flat pads, this wedge offers a specific 18.75° angle engineered for targeted support where subtle elevation improves imaging accuracy. It’s lightweight, stable, and compatible with most MRI tables, making it ideal for routine diagnostic imaging or specialized positioning setups where comfort and precision both matter.
