MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Deionized water is essential for maintaining the performance and longevity of MRI equipment by preventing mineral buildup and protecting the integrity of advanced cooling systems often utilized in imaging technology. Designed with the highest precision, this two-pack of deionized water ensures optimal operational reliability in facilities that demand exceptional standards. Each container undergoes rigorous quality checks to provide unparalleled purity, making it an indispensable choice for the maintenance of MRI products.

The Amerex Water Mist fire extinguishers offer a highly effective solution for Class A fires and areas with potential Class C (electrical) hazards. Featuring deionized water, they are ideal for protecting sensitive environments such as hospitals, clean rooms, and facilities with valuable documents or telecommunication equipment. The unique misting nozzle ensures safety from electrical shock, enhances cooling and soaking properties, and minimizes the dispersal of burning materials. Additionally, these extinguishers are designed to be user-friendly, easy to maintain, and serviceable, making them a reliable choice for safeguarding high-performance facilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why does an MRI facility need de-ionized water instead of regular water for its water-mist fire extinguishers?

De-ionized water is preferred in MRI and other sensitive environments because it eliminates minerals, conductivity, and residue that could damage imaging equipment or interfere with electronic systems. In a water-mist extinguisher, this purity helps protect against electrical shock risk while providing the cooling performance needed for Class A fires and potential Class C hazards. Regular tap water can leave mineral deposits and may conduct electricity—both unacceptable around MRI products, control consoles, and critical electronics.

2. Is this de-ionized water compatible with MRI-rated fire extinguishers like the Amerex Water Mist models?

Yes. This two-pack is designed specifically for water-mist extinguishers that rely on de-ionized water as the agent, including the units commonly used in MRI facilities, clean rooms, telecom spaces, and clinics. Because the water is certified low-conductivity and contaminant-free, it maintains the extinguisher’s MR Conditional performance, supports proper misting pattern and cooling, and prevents nozzle clogging. Facilities often keep extra containers on hand to meet PM schedules and avoid downtime.

3. How does using high-purity de-ionized water help protect MRI equipment and extend extinguisher life?

High-purity DI water helps prevent mineral buildup, corrosion, and system contamination, which are major causes of equipment wear in both cooling systems and water-mist fire extinguishers. It keeps internal components clean, supports a consistent spray pattern, and reduces the chance of residue reaching scanners, RF cabinets, or room electronics. For facilities that value predictable performance and lower maintenance costs, using DI water is one of the simplest ways to protect both MRI infrastructure and fire-safety equipment over time.
