MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can the 34° Wedge be safely used in MRI suites?

Yes. The 34° Wedge is made from non-magnetic, non-conductive materials and is MR Conditional, allowing safe use in MRI Zones III and IV, including near the bore at 1.5T and 3T. It’s designed for use directly within MRI environments without causing image distortion or safety risks.

2. What is the purpose of a 34° Wedge in MRI positioning?

The 34° Wedge helps technologists achieve precise patient elevation and alignment when higher angling is required. It’s often used for extremity, shoulder, or upper-spine imaging, where a steep angle improves both comfort and visualization while maintaining patient stability during scans.

3. How does a 34° wedge differ from smaller-angle positioning aids?

Compared to lower-angle wedges such as 18° or 22°, the 34° Wedge provides more pronounced lift and targeted support. This makes it especially useful when you need significant elevation to adjust patient anatomy for better coil coverage or to relieve pressure in long-duration scans.

4. Can the 34° Wedge be used for CT or Ultrasound imaging too?

Yes. While optimized for MRI, this wedge is also compatible with CT, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, and general medical positioning. Its lightweight design and non-metallic materials make it a reliable positioning aid across multiple imaging modalities.

5. What’s the best way to clean and maintain the 34° Wedge?

Clean the wedge using standard hospital disinfectants—alcohol-based or quaternary ammonium cleaners work well. Avoid bleach or abrasive tools that could degrade the surface. Regular cleaning between uses maintains infection control and preserves material integrity over time.
