MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How are these MR Safe labels used in an MRI suite, and what equipment should they go on?

These labels are meant for items that have no known hazards in any MRI environment. Most facilities use them on non-metallic tools, patient comfort items, positioning aids, and accessories that routinely enter Zones III and IV. Clear labeling helps techs move faster, reduces guesswork during screening, and keeps carts and cabinets organized so everyone immediately knows what can be brought into the magnet room.

2. Are the MR Safe labels durable enough for daily cleaning and heavy rotation?

Yes—these labels are made from wear-resistant material with a semi-permanent adhesive designed for high-use clinical areas. They hold up well through routine wipe-downs, frequent handling, and temperature changes. The print stays crisp, so the MR Safe icon remains readable for safety checks, even after long-term use.

3. What’s included in the 30-pack, and why would a facility need multiple sizes?

Each pack includes 5 small (1.5”) and 5 large (3.5”) labels of each ASTM style: MR Safe, MR Conditional, and MR Unsafe. The two sizes let you label everything from small handheld tools to large equipment. Using consistent ASTM icons across all MRI supplies makes your workflow cleaner and helps maintain compliance during audits, inspections, and daily safety rounds.
