MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why would an MRI facility choose a 60-pack of MR Safe labels instead of a smaller set?

Facilities that turn equipment over frequently or manage multiple MRI rooms often prefer the 60-pack because it provides enough labels to standardize marking across all non-magnetic items without running low. It’s useful for busy departments that routinely add new positioning aids, patient comfort tools, or accessory bins and want everything clearly identified according to ASTM standards. The larger pack simply gives you more coverage and fewer interruptions.

2. Are these MR Safe labels durable enough for daily disinfecting and high-use workflows?

Yes. These labels use a semi-permanent adhesive and a wear-resistant surface that stands up to routine hospital-grade disinfectants, frequent handling, and the temperature swings common in MRI prep and recovery areas. The printed icon stays clear so safety checks remain fast and reliable, even after months of cleaning cycles and everyday use.

3. What comes in the 60-pack, and how do the two label sizes help with organization?

Each pack includes 10 small (1.5") and 10 large (3.5") labels for each ASTM classification—MR Safe, MR Conditional, and MR Unsafe. Smaller labels fit items like tools, headphones, coils, and accessories, while larger labels work better on carts, drawers, monitors, and storage cabinets. Using both sizes helps create a consistent, visible labeling system across the entire MRI suite, making it easier for staff to identify what can enter controlled zones at a glance.
