MR Safe What does this mean?
MR Safe

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is the Bolster approved for use inside MRI environments?

Yes. The Bolster positioning aid is made from non-magnetic, non-conductive materials and is MR Conditional, making it safe for use in MRI Zones III and IV, including inside the scanner room at 1.5T and 3T. It’s designed to stay stable during imaging and won’t cause magnetic interference or image artifacts.

2. What is the Bolster used for in MRI positioning?

The Bolster provides knee and lower back support to help patients maintain comfortable, stable positioning throughout the scan. By relieving strain and pressure, it minimizes motion and contributes to clearer, more consistent MRI images—especially during longer procedures.

3. How does the Bolster differ from wedges or roll cushions?

Unlike angled wedges or cylindrical rolls, the Bolster’s rounded yet firm shape supports the natural curve of the knees or lumbar spine, promoting better alignment and reducing muscle tension. It’s a preferred option when both comfort and stillness are critical to image quality.

4. Can the Bolster be used for other imaging procedures besides MRI?

Yes. The Bolster is also widely used in CT, Ultrasound, and Nuclear Medicine exams. Its lightweight, non-metallic design makes it easy to reposition and safe for use near sensitive imaging systems without risk of interference.
