MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are ceramic utility scissors safe to use around MRI equipment?

Yes. These scissors are made with a fully non-metallic ceramic blade, which eliminates magnetic attraction and makes them a dependable choice for work in and around MRI systems. For facilities looking for non-magnetic scissors for MRI suite maintenance or prep, ceramic tools are an easy, low-risk option.

2. What types of tasks are these 2.3" ceramic scissors best for in an MRI environment?

They’re great for fine trimming, cutting tape, paperwork, labels, cable ties, and other light materials where precision matters. The smaller 2.3" blade gives you good control in tight spaces, making them useful for MRI coil accessories, padding adjustments, and delicate equipment work where metal tools aren’t appropriate.

3. How durable are ceramic scissors in a hospital or imaging-center setting?

Ceramic blades are naturally corrosion-proof and stay sharp longer than many metal options, even with repeated use. They tolerate routine clinical disinfectants and hold up well in busy MRI and laboratory environments. If you need long-lasting, non-metallic scissors that won’t rust or dull quickly, ceramic is a strong fit.
