MR Safe What does this mean?
MR Safe

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is the Hugger approved for use in MRI environments?

Yes. The Hugger is built from non-magnetic, non-conductive materials and labeled MR Conditional in accordance with ASTM F2503 standards. It can be safely used in MRI Zones III and IV, including inside the scan room, at 1.5 T and 3 T field strengths. Always confirm that the labeling matches your facility’s operating conditions before placing any positioning aid in the bore.

2. What is the Hugger used for during MRI scans?

The Hugger is a pediatric positioning aid designed to gently secure infants and young children during MRI, CT, or Ultrasound procedures. It helps minimize movement while keeping patients comfortable, reducing the need for sedation in many cases. The design includes foam inserts, an adjustable body wrap, arm and leg straps, and a head restraint to ensure stable, safe positioning throughout the scan.

3. How does the Hugger improve comfort and imaging quality?

By offering a supportive “hug” around the child’s body, the Hugger reduces anxiety and movement, which directly improves image quality and scan efficiency. The snug but soft support helps young patients feel more secure in an unfamiliar environment, allowing technologists to capture clearer images with fewer repeats—especially useful in long or motion-sensitive MRI sequences.

4. What are the size options for the Hugger?

The Hugger comes in two versions:

  • PA-210 (Child version): fits children from approximately 4 months to 3 years.
  • PA-211 (Infant version): fits infants up to 3 months old.

Both versions are lightweight, simple to adjust, and designed to fit securely within the MRI table setup while accommodating a range of pediatric sizes and body types.
