MR Safe What does this mean?
MR Safe

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is Kit “A” suitable for use in MRI environments?

Yes. Kit “A” is manufactured from non-magnetic, non-conductive materials and labeled MR Conditional under ASTM F2503. It can be used safely in MRI Zones III and IV, including the magnet room, at 1.5 T and 3 T field strengths. Always confirm the labeling and your facility’s conditions before bringing any item into the scan room.

2. What types of imaging procedures can benefit from using Kit “A”?

This kit is designed to support a range of diagnostic imaging procedures, including MRI, CT, Ultrasound, and Nuclear Medicine. The wedges and pads can be used to stabilize patients, relieve pressure, and maintain consistent anatomical positioning for clearer imaging results. Facilities often use Kit “A” for general positioning, extremity studies, and spine alignment during scans.

3. How is Kit “A” typically used in MRI exams?

Each piece in the kit serves a different positioning purpose. Smaller wedges can elevate joints or limbs to improve access and comfort, while larger supports help align the torso or head. By reducing motion and maintaining symmetry, these aids contribute to more reproducible imaging setups and improved diagnostic accuracy across repeated studies.

4. How does Kit “A” compare to other MRI positioning aids?

Kit “A” includes seven different pieces in a range of angles and shapes, allowing facilities to adapt to various patient sizes and scan requirements. It’s designed specifically for MRI use, following ASTM F2503 labeling standards, so it can remain in the magnet room when required. Facilities that perform a high mix of imaging studies often prefer kits like this because they provide standardized, reproducible positioning options across modalities.
