MR Safe What does this mean?
MR Safe

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is the Large Kit suitable for MRI environments?

Yes. The Large Kit is constructed from non-magnetic, non-conductive materials and labeled MR Conditional under ASTM F2503. It’s designed for safe use in MRI Zones III and IV, including during active scanning, when used under the manufacturer’s specified MRI conditions. The materials have been tested for magnetically induced displacement force, torque, and RF heating at both 1.5 T and 3 T field strengths.

2. What types of imaging procedures can the Large Kit be used for?

The Large Kit supports a wide range of imaging modalities—MRI, CT, Ultrasound, and Nuclear Medicine. Each of the eight components is shaped to improve anatomical positioning, stability, and patient comfort during diagnostic procedures. Facilities use this set for everything from spine and head imaging to torso alignment and general positioning where precise support helps reduce motion artifacts and enhances image quality.

3. How are the coated and uncoated versions different?

The PA-225 (uncoated) version has a standard foam surface that allows a soft, slightly textured contact feel—ideal for low-volume or controlled clinical settings. The PA-226 (coated) version adds a sealed, moisture-resistant coating that can be wiped clean easily between patients. The coated option is often preferred in higher-throughput MRI suites or where infection control and cleaning efficiency are top priorities.

4. How does the Large Kit compare to other MRI positioning kits?

The Large Kit provides a balance between versatility and efficiency. With eight core positioning aids, including head, torso, and wedge supports, it offers more flexibility than compact kits while remaining easy to handle and store. This makes it well-suited for facilities that need consistent, reproducible patient positioning across diverse scan types without maintaining a larger inventory of single-use supports.
