MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are these headphone covers approved for use with MRI headsets?

Yes. These large sanitary headphone covers are made from non-conductive, non-magnetic materials and are MR Conditional for use in MRI environments up to 3 Tesla. They’re designed specifically for MRI headset models such as the HS-130, HS-131, and HS-100 series, providing a safe, hygienic barrier that doesn’t interfere with imaging or patient comfort during scans.

2. Why should MRI facilities use disposable headphone covers for patients?

Disposable headphone covers are an important part of infection control in MRI suites, preventing cross-contamination between patients. These covers are made from soft, breathable, latex-free fabric that fits securely over MRI headsets without affecting sound quality or positioning. They also help extend the life of the headset cushions by protecting them from oils, moisture, and cleaning agents.

3. Are these headphone covers compatible with all MRI headset models?

These large white covers are sized for full over-ear MRI headsets and fit a wide range of models, including MRI Med’s MagnaMuff, Noise Guard, and Pediatric headset lines. Their elastic, tear-resistant design ensures a snug fit around most standard earcups used in MRI patient comfort systems. Always confirm your headset model for best fit — most facilities find this size works for nearly all adult headsets in active clinical use.
