MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the MRI safety status of the MedVac Vacuum Immobilization Bag?

The MedVac Vacuum Immobilization Bag is MR Safe, meaning it poses no known hazards in any MRI environment. It’s made entirely from non-magnetic, non-conductive materials that have been validated for safe use inside MRI scanners up to 3 Tesla. The design allows the bag to stay in the bore during imaging while maintaining full immobilization and patient comfort.

2. How does the MedVac Vacuum Immobilization Bag improve MRI image quality?

The MedVac Bag helps reduce patient movement by conforming to the patient’s body once air is removed. This stable support minimizes motion artifacts, allowing clearer, more accurate images on the first scan — often eliminating the need for repeat sequences or sedation. Its thin, flexible design fits easily under most MRI coils without affecting signal quality, making it a trusted choice for pediatric and diagnostic MRI studies.

3. Can the MedVac Bag be used inside the MRI room during scanning?

Yes. The MedVac Bag is safe for in-bore use during active MRI scanning. It’s designed for Zones III and IV and can remain in place throughout the procedure. When paired with the MedVac Hand Pump (PA-227) or an external vacuum system, air can be removed before scanning, creating a firm, supportive mold around the patient without introducing any metallic parts into the magnet room.

4. What materials are used, and how should the bag be cleaned between patients?

The MedVac Bag is built from soft, medical-grade polymers filled with chambered, non-magnetic beads that evenly distribute pressure for patient comfort. The smooth outer surface wipes clean easily using hospital-approved disinfectants such as mild quaternary or alcohol-based cleaners safe for polymers. Avoid harsh solvents or high-heat sterilization. The surface design also provides light insulation, helping keep infants warm during scans.

5. Which MedVac Vacuum Immobilization Bag size should I use for different patients?

The MedVac Vacuum Immobilization Bag comes in two main sizes to fit a range of pediatric patients:

  • Infant Splint (PA-233): Designed for newborns up to 1 year old.
  • Child Splint (PA-230): Suitable for children approximately 1 to 4 years old.

Both versions deliver the same secure immobilization and comfort, with thin profiles that fit easily under standard MRI coils. Each size molds to the patient’s body for stable, reproducible positioning—helping ensure consistent image quality for neonatal, pediatric, and research MRI protocols.
