MR Conditional What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

The MR Conditional 26-inch Bariatric Wheelchair is a specialized mobility solution designed for patients requiring assistance in MRI environments. Built to support individuals weighing up to 650 pounds, this MRI-compatible wheelchair combines durability with patient comfort. Its sturdy construction and ergonomic design ensure smooth maneuverability, even for larger body frames, making it an essential addition to healthcare settings such as hospitals and imaging centers. The wheelchair is engineered with materials that minimize interference with MRI equipment, ensuring safe and seamless integration into diagnostic environments. Features like padded, removable desk-length arms and flip-up footrests enhance patient comfort and ease of use, while the under-seat cross-brace provides additional stability during transport.

This bariatric wheelchair not only meets strict medical standards but also excels in practicality, with heavy-duty double-embossed upholstery for durability and pneumatic wheels for a smoother ride. The wheelchair is MR Conditional up to 3 Tesla, making it a reliable choice among MRI products. Its distinctive blue design allows for quick identification in MRI settings, and the clearly marked MR labeling ensures it meets safety requirements. Backed by a 5-year frame warranty and a 1-year warranty on upholstery and metal components under normal use, this wheelchair offers both long-lasting performance and peace of mind for healthcare providers.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is this 26-inch bariatric wheelchair fully MR Conditional for use in a 3T MRI suite?

Yes. This wheelchair is MR Conditional for 3T environments and built from non-magnetic materials that stay stable around the magnet. It’s designed for use in MRI Zones II–IV and won’t create magnetic pull or interfere with imaging when handled under standard MR Conditional procedures. Clear labeling on the frame makes quick safety checks easy during busy patient flow.

2. What’s the main advantage of choosing a 26-inch MRI bariatric wheelchair with a 650 lb capacity?

If you routinely see larger patients or anyone who needs more room to sit comfortably, the 26" width and higher weight rating add a level of stability and predictability that smaller MRI wheelchairs can’t match. The wider base keeps the chair steady when patients lean or shift, and the reinforced frame makes it a reliable choice for facilities that want a truly heavy-duty MRI transport option.

3. How well do the removable arms and flip-up footrests work for bariatric transfers onto the MRI table?

They make a big difference. The removable desk-length arms clear the side for lateral slide boards or team-assisted transfers, which is often essential with a 650 lb patient. The flip-up footrests keep the front open so staff can position the chair close to the table without obstacles. Together, they help reduce strain for both patients and MRI staff.

4. Is this a good fit for facilities that scan patients with limited mobility or complex body positioning needs?

Yes. The wide 26" seat, supportive solid insert, and reinforced cross-brace design give patients a stable base whether they can reposition themselves or rely entirely on staff. The pneumatic-style wheels help the chair roll smoothly across thresholds and tight corridors, which is important when transporting someone who cannot assist with weight shifting.

5. What kind of day-to-day maintenance does a heavy-capacity MR Conditional wheelchair need?

Routine cleaning with standard hospital disinfectants is all it takes. Many imaging centers also do quick weekly checks on arm hinges, cross-brace hardware, and wheel bearings—nothing specialized. The heavy-duty frame holds up well to continuous use, and the 5-year frame warranty gives teams confidence that it’s built for long-term service.
