MR Conditional What does this mean?
MR Safe

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Designed for use in sensitive imaging environments, the MRI Med MR Conditional Ballpoint Pens offer reliable writing performance without compromising safety. These pens provide confidence in MRI zones by minimizing the risk of projectile hazards and help to maintain a secure clinical setting. The pens are clearly labeled as MR Conditional to 7T, to avoid confusion with any standard pens that may become projectiles.

Features:

  • 10-pack of navy barrel, medium-point, blue-ink pens
  • Plastic barrel and cap-off design
  • Smooth, consistent ink flow for everyday clinical use
  • MR Conditional to 7T

Overall Dimensions:

  • 5.9 inches in length

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t standard pens be used in MRI environments?

Many everyday pens contain hidden ferromagnetic components that may become unsafe around MRI systems or create confusion during MRI safety screening. MRI-specific pens help departments avoid accidental introduction of unsafe office supplies into controlled MRI areas. Clearly labeled MR Conditional pens also support stronger Zone III and Zone IV compliance by making approved tools easy to identify during daily operations.

Who typically uses MR Conditional pens in an imaging center?

These pens are commonly used by MRI technologists, radiologists, transport staff, nurses, anesthesia teams, front-desk coordinators, and MRI safety personnel. They’re useful anywhere staff need to complete screening forms, patient documentation, equipment logs, or workflow notes without bringing standard metal-containing pens into MRI-controlled areas.

Are MR Conditional pens important for MRI safety training and compliance?

Yes. Small everyday objects are one of the most common sources of MRI safety oversights because they often enter the scan room unnoticed. Using dedicated MR Conditional writing tools helps reinforce department-wide MRI safety habits and reduces the chance of non-approved items accidentally crossing into restricted zones. Many facilities standardize MRI-safe accessories like pens, clipboards, and markers as part of broader MRI safety protocols.
