MR Conditional What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is the MR Conditional Pulse Oximeter safe to use inside the MRI room?

Yes. This pulse oximeter is MR Conditional, tested and approved for use in MRI environments up to 3 Tesla when used under the specified conditions. It’s engineered with non-ferromagnetic, fiber-optic components that allow accurate oxygen saturation and pulse rate monitoring directly inside the MRI suite (Zones III and IV) without distorting images or creating magnetic interference.

2. Can this pulse oximeter be used for all patient types in MRI scans?

Yes. The system supports adult, pediatric, and infant monitoring with dedicated fiber-optic PureLight® sensors. These sensors are available in multiple cable lengths (20’ or 30’) to accommodate different patient positions and MRI table setups, giving facilities flexibility across a range of imaging workflows—from routine body MRI to pediatric sedation cases.

3. How long does the oximeter operate on battery power, and how is it recharged?

The unit provides approximately 30 hours of continuous use on a full charge, with a quick 4-hour recharge time between uses. It includes a tabletop design that allows simultaneous charging and operation when placed outside the magnet room. This long battery life makes it well-suited for high-volume MRI departments and mobile units where continuous monitoring is required.

4. Can this pulse oximeter integrate with other MRI patient monitoring systems?

Yes. The MR Conditional Pulse Oximeter can operate as a standalone device or integrate with compatible MRI monitoring setups via its fiber-optic interface and data management options. It works with nVISION software for pulse oximetry data review and storage, allowing facilities to streamline patient monitoring documentation while maintaining MRI safety compliance.
