MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

The MR Disposable Scalpels with #15 blade (4-pack) are meticulously crafted to deliver precision and reliability for medical professionals. Each scalpel features a superior #15 titanium blade, offering unmatched sharpness and a precise cutting edge suitable for various delicate medical procedures. Designed for single-use, these disposable scalpels uphold the highest hygiene standards, eliminating the need for sterilization and providing a convenient solution for sterile environments. Their compliance with CE standards and compatibility with MRI equipment make them an essential addition to any medical facility prioritizing efficiency and accuracy.

Engineered with thoughtful details, the scalpels feature a textured, molded handle with a 6 cm measurement scale for enhanced control and usability. Measuring a total of 6 inches from the blade tip to the handle’s end, these scalpels include a see-through safety cap to ensure secure handling. The non-reflective, non-ferrous titanium blades are conditionally compatible with up to 3-Tesla MRI products, making them an excellent choice for healthcare settings where precision and safety are paramount.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are these disposable #15 scalpels appropriate for use near MRI systems, and what is their MRI safety designation?

These scalpels use a non-ferrous titanium blade and a molded, non-magnetic handle. They are MR Conditional to 3 Tesla, so they can be used safely in MRI prep areas and for procedures taking place near high-field equipment when the labeled conditions are followed. MRI staff often choose this style of scalpel when they need a sharp, reliable cutting tool that won’t introduce ferromagnetic risk or cause unpredictable behavior inside Zones III and IV.

2. Why choose disposable titanium #15 scalpels instead of reusable blades in MRI-adjacent procedures?

Single-use scalpels help facilities maintain sterility and speed up workflow, especially in MRI environments where cross-contamination and turnaround time matter. The titanium blade provides a crisp, consistent cut without the reflective glare that can happen with stainless steel. Because they’re disposable, techs and clinicians avoid the added steps of tracking, sterilizing, and re-inspecting reusable blades — which is helpful in busy outpatient imaging centers and hybrid MRI-procedural rooms.

3. What practical features do these MR scalpels offer for precision work in MRI settings?

Each scalpel includes a textured handle for better control, a 6 cm measurement scale for quick reference, and a clear safety cap for secure transport. The #15 blade is well-suited for delicate, fine-tissue work, and the titanium construction keeps the cutting edge sharp without adding magnetic interaction. The lightweight 6-inch profile also makes them comfortable to handle during longer prep tasks or minor procedures that take place close to the magnet.
