MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why would an MRI department choose an antistatic patient shifter instead of a standard MRI slide board?

Facilities reach for an antistatic shifter when they’re working around systems or coils that are especially sensitive to electrostatic discharge. The antistatic surface helps prevent sparks or static buildup when moving patients across sheets or blankets, which is useful in dry climates or high-turnover suites where uniforms and linens generate a lot of static. It gives techs a stable, low-friction transfer surface but with an added layer of protection for electronic coils, lead wires, and other MRI accessories that can be affected by ESD.

2. Is this antistatic shifter appropriate for use in pre-scan setup inside MRI Zones II and III?

Yes. The construction is fully non-magnetic and non-conductive, so techs can use it during prep and positioning without introducing magnetic-attraction risks or interference with MRI coils. The large 72-inch surface makes it easy to stage a patient directly from a transport stretcher onto the MRI table. Its antistatic properties also help reduce sticking, grabbing, or clothing cling during the slide, which keeps transfers smooth in tight MRI control areas where patients and equipment tend to generate static.

3. How durable is the antistatic surface during high-volume MRI workflow, and how should it be cleaned?

The shifter is built for repetitive use in busy imaging centers. The surface doesn’t degrade with frequent sliding, and the twelve grip points give staff plenty of control even during heavier patient transfers. Cleaning is simple—its smooth finish wipes down quickly with standard hospital disinfectants, so infection-control teams don’t have to modify their existing protocols. Many departments pair the shifter with disposable slide sheets for bariatric or limited-mobility cases to maintain a consistent glide and extend the life of the board.
