MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I know if the MR Safe Non-Headset can be used safely in the MRI suite?

The Non-Headset is classified as MR Safe, meaning it contains no magnetic or conductive materials and poses no known hazards in any MRI environment. It’s designed specifically for use inside the scan room, even during active imaging, without creating interference or safety risks.

2. What’s the difference between the MR Safe Non-Headset and a standard MRI headset?

The Non-Headset design is ideal for head-coil applications where traditional headset styles won’t fit comfortably. It provides soft, compressible earmuffs that integrate directly with the coil opening while still allowing clear audio through the sound system. Many facilities pair it with MRI-approved earplugs for noise reduction.

3. Which MRI sound systems work with the MR Safe Non-Headset?

It connects easily to most MRI Med and OEM sound systems using its male 2-prong adapter. The headset tubing is available in 4-foot and 10-foot options, allowing flexible routing around different magnet setups and room configurations.

4. How can facilities maintain hygiene and extend the life of the Non-Headset?

For infection control, use MRI Med sanitary headphone covers — model SC-100 (white) or SC-103 (black). These disposable, latex-free covers create a clean barrier between patients. The earmuffs themselves can be wiped down with mild, hospital-grade disinfectants safe for plastics and rubber.

5. When should an MRI facility choose a Non-Headset over disposable earplugs alone?

Earplugs protect hearing but don’t allow two-way audio or music playback. The Non-Headset delivers both comfort and communication, helping patients stay calm and responsive throughout scans. It’s a smart upgrade for facilities focused on patient experience and workflow efficiency.
