MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MRI ACR Small Phantom used for?

The MRI ACR Small Phantom is designed for quality assurance testing and ACR accreditation in MRI systems. It lets technologists measure geometric distortion, slice thickness, spatial resolution, contrast, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to confirm consistent image quality. Using the small phantom helps facilities meet ACR MRI Accreditation Program requirements and document routine scanner performance.

Is the MRI ACR Small Phantom MR Safe or MR Conditional?

This phantom is MR Safe—it contains no ferromagnetic materials and poses no known hazards in any MRI environment. It can be safely placed inside the magnet bore during quality assurance scans at both 1.5 Tesla and 3 Tesla field strengths.

How does the Small ACR Phantom differ from medium or large phantoms?

The Small ACR Phantom (4.5 inch diameter) is optimized for dedicated or small-field coils, such as head, knee, or extremity coils, where space is limited. Larger ACR Phantoms provide a wider field of view for body or whole-system QA testing. Many facilities use multiple sizes to cover both routine system calibration and coil-specific evaluations.

What testing standards does the MRI ACR Small Phantom meet?

It complies with the American College of Radiology (MRI Accreditation Program) and international QA guidelines including IPEM Report 80, AAPM Report 28, AAPM Report 34, and AAPM Report 100. The phantom is CE Certified and includes a manual detailing all recommended imaging tests, result assessments, and documentation steps.

How is the MRI ACR Small Phantom stored and shipped?

Each phantom is securely packaged for protection during transport. A fitted protective case (sold separately, model PC-138) is available for long-term storage to prevent damage between QA sessions. Stocked items typically ship within 48 hours (Mon–Fri, PST) via UPS, FedEx, or freight, with tracking provided once the order leaves our California facility.
