MR Conditional What does this mean?
MR Safe

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is the MRI Air E Cylinder safe for use inside MRI rooms?

Yes. The MRI Air E Cylinder is MR Conditional, tested for safe use in MRI environments up to 3 Tesla under specified conditions. It’s made entirely from non-magnetic Aluminum 6061 T6, which prevents magnetic attraction and image interference. Its lightweight and durable build allows it to be safely stored or used in MRI Zones III and IV without risk to staff or equipment.

2. How does this MRI Air E Cylinder compare to a standard compressed air tank?

Standard medical air cylinders are often made with steel, which is magnetic and unsafe in MRI environments. This MRI-specific model uses aluminum construction, making it both lightweight and magnetically safe. It offers the same 680-liter capacity as a conventional E-size cylinder but with materials and labeling that meet MRI safety requirements, ensuring both compliance and performance during patient care or ventilator support.

3. Can this MRI air cylinder connect to my current MRI regulators and carts?

Yes. The MRI Air E Cylinder works seamlessly with MRI Med’s MR Conditional regulators, flowmeters, and cylinder carts, as well as other MRI-compatible gas systems designed for use in magnet rooms. Using matched components helps maintain consistent MR Conditional labeling across the setup, supporting compliance and preventing cross-contamination with non-MRI cylinders.

4. What’s the best way to handle and store MRI Air E Cylinders safely?

Always store cylinders upright and secured using a non-magnetic cart or wall bracket. Keep protective valve caps in place when not connected to a regulator and avoid rolling or dropping the cylinder. MRI Air cylinders should be stored away from direct heat and checked regularly for valve integrity. Proper handling not only ensures MRI safety but also extends the life of the cylinder and fittings.

5. Can this MRI Air Cylinder be refilled by standard medical gas suppliers?

Yes. Most certified medical gas suppliers can refill MRI Conditional aluminum cylinders. Always confirm that the supplier follows MRI-designated filling and inspection procedures to maintain labeling compliance. Using the correct refill process ensures the cylinder remains safe for MRI use and continues to meet the same performance standards throughout its service life.
