MR Conditional What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is the MRI Conditional Sphygmomanometer safe to use inside the MRI suite?

Yes. This sphygmomanometer is MR Conditional, validated for safe use in MRI environments up to 3 Tesla when used under the stated conditions. It’s built entirely from non-magnetic materials, so it won’t be attracted to the magnet or distort images. Its pressure-proof manometer and polyamide housing maintain accurate readings even in high-field MRI zones, allowing confident use in Zones III and IV during active scanning.

2. What makes this sphygmomanometer MRI-ready compared to standard blood pressure devices?

Unlike conventional blood pressure cuffs that use metallic components or conductive tubing, this model is designed specifically for MRI environments. Every element—from the gauge mechanism to the inflation bulb—is non-magnetic and RF-neutral. The large, easy-to-read dial (56 mm) offers excellent visibility in low-light MRI suites, while the exclusive pressure-distribution system delivers consistent, artifact-free readings without affecting scan quality.

3. Which cuff options are available, and can they be swapped between patients?

Two cuff sizes are available: the adult cuff (ME-102) and the child cuff (ME-103). Both are latex-free and designed with washable, Velcro-fastened straps for easy cleaning between patients. The cuffs connect via a single-tube system that’s compatible only with this MR Conditional sphygmomanometer, ensuring stable pressure readings and consistent fit for repeatable results across different patient sizes.

4. Can this MRI sphygmomanometer be used during active scanning, or only in prep and recovery?

It can safely remain in the MRI room during active scanning when used according to its labeled MR Conditional conditions. The non-magnetic construction and fiber-free air pathway eliminate the risk of heating or image interference, so it performs accurately while the magnet is running. It’s suitable for routine monitoring, anesthesia-assisted scans, or situations where continuous blood pressure readings are required.

5. Is calibration or special maintenance required for the MRI Conditional Sphygmomanometer?

The sphygmomanometer arrives factory-calibrated and ready for immediate use. Routine calibration checks are recommended based on facility policy or after any impact event. The manometer’s shock-resistant design and micro-filter protection help safeguard internal components from contamination or pressure surges, extending service life and reducing downtime for recalibration.
