MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can these disposable breast biopsy coil covers be used during active MRI scans?

Yes. These covers are made from non-metallic, non-conductive materials and are MR Conditional up to 3 Tesla, so they can safely remain in the scan room during imaging. They won’t cause magnetic interference or image distortion, making them ideal for breast biopsy procedures that require precision and consistency.

2. Which MRI systems are these coil covers compatible with?

They’re designed for a range of GE and Philips MRI breast coil systems, including GE Excite, HD, HDx, and Signa LX (1.5T) and Philips Achieva and Intera (1.5T and 3.0T) coils. The soft, form-fitting design allows a smooth fit over each platform’s coil housing, protecting the wells and maintaining clear access to ports and patient positioning features.

3. How do disposable coil covers improve infection control in MRI breast biopsy procedures?

These single-use covers act as a protective barrier between the patient and the coil, preventing cross-contamination from lotions, perspiration, or skin contact. They remove the need for manual cleaning between exams, helping staff reduce turnover times and maintain a consistently hygienic environment in compliance with MRI infection control protocols.
