MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do these breast biopsy coil covers help keep MRI breast coils clean during high-volume biopsy days?

Coils take a beating during breast biopsy setups — makeup, lotion, prep solutions, and perspiration all end up inside the wells. These covers use a soft, flexible material with a 1.75-inch flap design that shields the interior surfaces where buildup usually occurs. Techs like them because they cut down on post-procedure cleanup and keep the wells from absorbing residue that’s difficult to remove without repeated deep cleaning. Over time, that helps preserve coil integrity and reduces the amount of disinfecting your team has to do between patients.

2. Will these coil covers fit the breast coil systems we use across our MRI fleet?

They’re shaped for common 7- and 8-channel systems from GE, Philips, and Siemens, including the GE Excite, HDx, and 8-Channel configurations, the Philips Achieva and SENSE coils, and Siemens Avanto, Espree, and Symphony platforms. Because the fit is predictable across manufacturers, staff can prep the biopsy room the same way regardless of which scanner the patient is assigned to. That consistency is a big help for facilities running mixed-vendor environments or rotating technologists between rooms.

3. What is the MRI safety status of these disposable coil covers, and can they stay in place during active scanning?

These covers are labeled MR Safe, meaning they contain no magnetic or conductive materials known to pose hazards in any MRI environment. They’re designed to stay on the coil from patient positioning through the full biopsy sequence and imaging exam. Keeping the cover in place throughout the procedure helps maintain a clean, controlled surface without interrupting workflow or touching the sterile field.
