MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the MRI safety rating for this disposable Mac blade, and can it be used in 1.5T and 3T MRI environments?

This blade is MR Conditional, designed for use in MRI environments when the conditions listed on its labeling are followed. It’s suitable for 1.5T and 3T suites, making it a practical choice for airway readiness in Zones III and IV. Because it’s disposable, many facilities use it to keep a clean, dedicated MRI airway kit without worrying about reprocessing cycles or bringing OR blades into the magnet room.

2. Does the disposable Mac blade work with standard MRI fiber-optic handles, and is the light output strong enough for routine intubation?

Yes. It uses the Green Label fitting, which matches the fiber-optic handles typically approved for MRI use. Even though it’s single-use, the fiber-optic channel delivers reliable illumination that gives a clear view of the airway, similar to what you’d expect from a reusable Mac blade. MRI techs and anesthesia teams appreciate that it feels familiar in the hand, which helps when working in tight spaces or during time-sensitive cases.

3. How does this disposable Mac blade compare to reusable MRI laryngoscope blades in workflow and infection control?

Disposable blades simplify the workflow—no cleaning, no tracking, and no waiting on reprocessing. They come 25 per pack, so the MRI airway cart can stay stocked and ready. For facilities with strict infection-control policies or high patient turnover, the single-use design reduces cross-contamination risk and keeps downtime to a minimum. Reusable blades offer long-term durability, but many MRI teams prefer disposable Mac blades when predictability, cleanliness, and availability matter most.
