MR Unsafe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

The MRI Handheld Scanner is a trusted and highly efficient tool designed to accurately detect hidden metallic objects. Renowned as the leading hand-held metal detector worldwide for over 20 years, this device offers exceptional precision and reliability, making it an indispensable product for radiologists and patients alike. Its straightforward one-switch operation and ultimate sensitivity allow for thorough and efficient scanning, ensuring that individuals are free from concealed metallic items before undergoing MRI procedures. The durable, high-impact ABS case with a reinforced coil compartment further assures longevity and rugged performance in various environments.

Engineered for reliability and ease of use, the MRI Handheld Scanner features a large 10-inch scan surface for rapid yet comprehensive scanning. It can detect medium-sized pistols from a distance of 9 inches, large knives from 6 inches, razor blades and box cutters from 3 inches, and even small items such as foil-wrapped drugs or tiny jewelry from 1 inch. With no tools needed to change its powerful 9V battery, the scanner provides a sharp audible alarm and bright red LED light to indicate any metal detection. A momentary push button helps eliminate interference from ambient metal, such as rebar or metal walls, ensuring better accuracy. Additionally, LED indicators signal device status, including power, low battery, and alarms, making it a practical and user-friendly choice among MRI equipment and MRI products.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How accurate is the MRI Handheld Scanner for detecting metal before a patient enters the MRI suite?

This scanner is designed for high-sensitivity pre-MRI screening, giving techs a fast way to check for hidden or forgotten metallic items that might not be obvious during intake. Its large 10-inch scan surface and strong detection range make it effective for everything from small jewelry to larger metal objects. It can pick up items like razor blades at about 3 inches, knives at 6 inches, and even medium-sized objects from farther away. For busy MRI teams, it’s a reliable way to prevent metal from following a patient into Zones III or IV.

2. Can the MRI Handheld Scanner be used inside the MRI room?

No. This scanner is not designed for use inside Zone IV. While it’s extremely helpful for patient screening in Zones II and III, it contains electronic components that shouldn’t be exposed to the magnetic field. Keeping it outside the MRI room ensures both safety and proper device performance. Its job is to confirm a patient is completely free of concealed metal before they get anywhere near the bore, helping prevent safety risks and exam interruptions.

3. What features make this handheld scanner a good fit for MRI screening workflows?

This scanner is built for quick, thorough pre-MRI checks. The one-switch operation, strong audible alarm, and bright LED indicator make it easy to use with any patient, including those who need extra guidance or can’t reliably self-report metal. It also has a momentary interference-rejection button, which helps filter out environmental metal (walls, stretchers, rebar) so the scan stays accurate. Add in the rugged ABS housing and simple 9-volt battery replacement, and it becomes a dependable tool for daily screening in high-volume imaging centers.
