MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the MRI safety status of the MRI Head Positioning Pad?

The MRI Head Positioning Pad is designed for use in MRI environments and made from non-magnetic, non-conductive materials that don’t interfere with image quality. It can safely remain in MRI Zones III and IV, including inside the bore during scanning. Always check your facility’s safety documentation or product labeling to confirm whether your specific unit is listed as MR Conditional and approved for use at your scanner’s field strengths (commonly 1.5 T or 3 T).

2. How does the MRI Head Positioning Pad improve scan quality and patient comfort?

This pad provides stable, ergonomic head support that minimizes patient motion during brain and head MRI procedures. By helping the patient stay still and aligned within the head coil, it reduces motion artifacts and improves image sharpness and diagnostic accuracy. Its foam construction also improves comfort, which is key for longer scans where movement can easily occur.

3. What sizes are available, and how do I choose the right one?

The pad comes in two sizes:

  • Large (PA-375): 11”W × 8”D × 5.5”H — ideal for adults or standard head coils.
  • Small (PA-375.1): 7.5”W × 3”D × 4”H — suited for pediatric patients or tighter coil configurations.

Both options provide secure, cushioned positioning and can be used alone or combined with other MRI Med head and neck supports for customized comfort.

4. What materials are used, and how should it be cleaned between scans?

The MRI Head Positioning Pad is built from medical-grade, non-magnetic foam with a sealed surface for easy cleaning. It tolerates standard hospital-grade disinfectants, including alcohol-based or quaternary-ammonium wipes. Avoid harsh solvents or bleach to preserve material integrity. Regular cleaning maintains long-term durability and hygiene, especially in high-turnover MRI suites.

5. How does the MRI Head Positioning Pad compare to other head cradles or multipad systems?

The MRI Head Positioning Pad is a simple, versatile option for everyday head and brain MRI procedures. Compared to larger head cradles or modular multipad systems, it offers a faster setup, easy cleaning, and flexible use across different coils and patient types. For scans that require more complex immobilization or coil-specific support, facilities may pair this pad with MRI Med’s Multipad Positioning System or custom head cradles to fine-tune patient comfort and stability.
