MR Unsafe What does this mean?
MR Safe

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

The MRI In Use LED Sign is a purpose-built lightbox designed to clearly signal when an MRI machine is active. Featuring bright, high-quality LED illumination, it ensures excellent visibility—even from a distance or in low-light environments. The bold “MRI In Use” message provides an immediate, unmistakable alert, helping individuals recognize when safety precautions are required. Ideal for hospitals and imaging centers, this sign is a reliable safety solution that supports the protection of patients, staff, and visitors. Power requirement: 100-240VAC 50/60Hz hard wiring.

Features:

  • Clearly marks magnet-on status near MRI rooms, improving patient and staff safety
  • Energy-efficient LEDs ensure the message is visible from a distance, day or night
  • Displays a prominent safety warning with red text on a white background
  • Hardwired Installation (100-240 VAC): Battery backup optional
  • Easy to install via wall-mounting and cost-effective for all types of MRI facilities
  • MR Unsafe: For installation outside of MRI-protected zones

Overall Dimensions:

  • 12.25"L x 2"W x 7.5"H

Available options:

  • SM-201: MRI In Use LED Sign - Standard

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Where should an LED “MRI In Use LED Sign” warning sign be installed in an MRI suite?

This LED sign is designed for placement outside MRI-protected zones, typically at the final checkpoint before staff or visitors enter Zones III or IV. Facilities mount it near magnet-room doors, control-room exits, or screening areas so everyone approaching the field can clearly see that the magnet is energized at all times. Because it’s not intended for use inside magnet-exposed areas, it’s hardwired in a safe location where it can deliver a bright, constant warning without interfering with MRI operation.

2. How visible is the LED sign in busy MRI hallways or low-light areas?

The red LED display is easy to read from a distance, whether the hallway is brightly lit or dim. The illuminated lettering cuts through shadows, glare, and typical MRI-suite lighting conditions, which makes it far more noticeable than a standard printed sign. Many MRI teams prefer LED warnings for high-traffic corridors because the constant glow reduces the chance of someone overlooking the magnet hazard.

3. What power setup does the sign require, and does it need any ongoing maintenance?

The sign uses a hardwired 100-240 VAC connection, which gives you consistent, always-on illumination without relying on plug-in power. Beyond basic electrical installation, it requires very little upkeep—just occasional surface cleaning to keep the faceplate clear. An optional battery backup version is also available.
