MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are these breakaway lanyards safe to wear inside MRI Zones III and IV?

Yes. These lanyards are MR Safe, meaning they contain no metallic or magnetic components and pose no known hazards in MRI suites. Staff can wear them throughout patient prep, scanning, and recovery workflows without worrying about pull-force risks or interference with MRI systems.

2. How reliable is the breakaway feature for daily MRI use?

The breakaway clasp is engineered to release under pressure and reattach cleanly, even after thousands of cycles. This is important in MRI environments where cords, badges, or accessories can catch on equipment. The design gives you a secure everyday lanyard while reducing accidental-injury risks in high-movement areas.

3. What color options are available, and how do imaging departments typically use them?

These lanyards come in 13 colors, which makes it easy to organize teams, identify roles, or match departmental branding. Many MRI departments use color coding for technologists, nurses, anesthesia staff, students, and vendors. Each color is sold in bags of 25, making them practical for outfitting large teams or onboarding new staff.
