MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. When would an MRI facility choose a half-size transfer board instead of a full-length shifter?

Many MRI teams use a half board when they only need help with short lateral moves—like adjusting a patient’s position on the MRI table, bridging small gaps between stretchers, or supporting partial assists with patients who can help themselves. The compact size works well in tight rooms where full-length boards are awkward, and it’s easier to keep within reach in Zones II and III. If your workflow involves frequent “micro-adjustments” rather than full-body slides, the half board is often the more efficient choice.

2. Does the half transfer board stay stable during transfers, and is it suitable for patients with limited mobility?

Yes. Even at a shorter length, the board provides a solid, secure platform because the material is rigid enough to prevent flexing during supported moves. The six hand holes give techs predictable grip points, which helps when handling patients who need more guided support. It’s a good option for facilities that see a mix of cooperative and semi-dependent patients but don’t want to manage a larger board for every transfer.

3. How does the compact size affect cleaning, durability, and day-to-day handling in a high-volume MRI suite?

The smaller footprint actually speeds up turnover. It wipes down quickly, stores easily, and doesn’t add clutter around the MRI table. The board holds up well under repeated use because the surface resists moisture and friction wear, so it won’t start to bow, peel, or catch on linens. Techs like this size because it’s light, easy to grab one-handed, and fast to position—ideal for busy MRI schedules where every minute matters.
