MR Conditional What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are MRI Sphygmomanometer Cuffs safe to use inside the MRI room?

Yes. These cuffs are MR Conditional, engineered and tested for safe use in MRI environments up to 3 Tesla when paired with MRI Med’s MR Conditional Sphygmomanometers (ME-102 and ME-103). They’re built from non-magnetic, latex-free materials that won’t distort images or react to the magnetic field. Each cuff maintains consistent pressure readings during active scanning and can safely remain in the magnet room (Zones III and IV) under the stated conditions.

2. What makes these cuffs different from standard blood pressure cuffs?

Standard cuffs often include metallic or conductive parts that can cause artifacts or safety issues near an MRI magnet. MRI Med’s cuffs are specifically designed for MRI use, using a single-tube, non-metallic design that eliminates those risks. They include an exclusive pressure-distribution system for consistent readings, even in high-field environments. The fabric is soft, washable, and durable, ensuring patient comfort while maintaining accuracy through repeated use.

3. Can these cuffs be used during active MRI scans or only before and after imaging?

They’re designed for use during active scanning. When attached to the corresponding MR Conditional sphygmomanometer, these cuffs provide continuous, accurate blood pressure readings throughout MRI procedures. Their non-magnetic construction prevents interference with images, making them ideal for both clinical and research imaging applications where real-time monitoring is essential.

4. How do you clean and care for MRI Sphygmomanometer Cuffs?

The cuffs are washable and reusable, designed for fast turnaround in busy imaging departments. After each use, wipe them with a mild disinfectant or MRI-approved cleaning agent. Avoid soaking, bleach, or abrasive cleaners that can damage the Velcro fastener or tubing. Allow the cuff to air dry fully before reuse. With routine cleaning and inspection for wear or leaks, these cuffs deliver dependable long-term performance.

5. Are replacement cuffs available separately, and how often should they be replaced?

Yes. MRI Med offers replacement cuffs in all standard sizes to fit existing MRI Med sphygmomanometers. Replacement frequency depends on usage volume and cleaning protocols — high-throughput MRI centers may replace cuffs every 6–12 months, while lower-volume facilities can expect longer service life. Regular inspection for fraying, valve leaks, or loss of elasticity ensures continued safety and measurement accuracy.
