MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do these 36" MRI siderail pads help reduce patient injury during transport or positioning?

Techs usually add siderail pads when they’re working with patients who are unsteady, disoriented, or coming in from the ED. The extra cushioning helps prevent arms or hips from hitting the bare rails during movement, which is especially important with older patients or anyone who startles during transfers. Because these pads stay secured along the full 36" length, they give consistent protection instead of leaving gaps like loose blankets or makeshift padding.

2. Are these siderail pads fully non-metallic and safe to use in MRI Zones III and IV?

Yes. The pads are built from non-metallic materials, so they can stay on the stretcher when you enter Zone IV for patient setup. They don’t shift under the field, and they won’t introduce artifacts or interfere with coils during pre-scan positioning. Most facilities leave them installed permanently since they improve patient safety without adding any MRI-related risk.

3. How do these siderail pads hold up to constant cleaning in a high-turnover MRI environment?

The surface is fluid-resistant and non-porous, which means disinfecting between patients is quick and predictable—no absorption, no breakdown, and no lingering moisture. The hook-and-loop backing also stays reliable after repeated cleaning cycles, so the pads aren’t constantly peeling off or needing adjustment. For MRI departments with heavy daily volume, they end up being one of the easier accessories to maintain.
