MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How is the MRI Wedge Positioner used during imaging procedures?

This two-piece wedge set helps stabilize and elevate body parts to achieve the correct scan angle and minimize motion artifacts. Technologists use it under knees, arms, shoulders, or hips to improve alignment and patient comfort during MRI exams. The foam contours to the body to help patients stay relaxed and still — which leads to sharper, more consistent images.

2. Can this wedge positioner stay in the MRI room during active scanning?

Yes. Each piece is made from non-magnetic, non-conductive materials, allowing it to safely remain in the MRI environment, including during scanning. It won’t interfere with magnetic fields or image quality, making it reliable for both high-field and low-field MRI systems.

3. What sizes are available, and how do I choose between them?

The set comes in two size options: Small (10”L x 10”W x 3”H) and Large (14”L x 4”W x 1.5”H). The smaller wedge is ideal for extremity or pediatric exams, while the larger version works well for spine, hip, or general body positioning. Many imaging centers keep both sizes on hand to adapt to different anatomy and coil setups.

4. How should the MRI Wedge Positioner be cleaned between patients?

The antimicrobial nylon cover is designed for repeated cleaning with standard hospital disinfectants. Simply wipe the surface between uses — avoiding bleach, which can degrade nylon fibers over time. The sealed seams and smooth surface prevent fluid absorption, supporting your infection control protocols without slowing down workflow.

5. How durable is the foam and cover for daily MRI use?

The viscoelastic foam maintains its shape and firmness even after hundreds of uses, and the reinforced nylon seams resist cracking or tearing. With proper cleaning and storage, most facilities use the same wedges for years before replacement, making this set a dependable, long-term part of your MRI positioning system.
