MR Safe What does this mean?
MR Safe

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MRI Multipad Ear used for during scans?

The Multipad Ear is designed to support and cushion the patient’s head and ear area during MRI scans, helping reduce movement and improve comfort in tight coil spaces. Its purpose is to stabilize positioning, especially during head, neck, or neuro exams, while minimizing pressure points that could cause discomfort or motion artifacts.

Is the Multipad Ear MR Safe for use inside the MRI bore?

Yes. The Multipad Ear is MR Safe, as defined by ASTM F2503. It’s made from non-metallic, non-conductive materials that have no known hazards in any MRI environment. This means it can be safely placed inside the bore and near active coils without affecting the magnetic field or introducing image distortion.

How does the Multipad Ear improve image quality and workflow efficiency?

By keeping the patient’s head stable and supported, the Multipad Ear reduces unwanted motion—one of the most common causes of scan repeats. Its adjustable air system lets technologists fine-tune support with a manual hand pump and release valve, creating the ideal balance of comfort and control. This not only helps capture clearer images but also streamlines setup time between patients, improving throughput in busy MRI departments.

Can the Multipad Ear be reused for multiple patients?

Yes. The Multipad Ear is designed for multi-patient use when properly cleaned between scans. The pad’s smooth, sealed surface is compatible with standard hospital-grade disinfectants, allowing for quick sanitation without damaging materials. This durability makes it a reliable and cost-effective tool for daily use in MRI suites.

What are the dimensions and setup details for the Multipad Ear?

The Multipad Ear measures 6.5 inches long by 4.0 inches wide, with a variable thickness between 0.4 and 1.5 inches depending on inflation. It requires no assembly or calibration—simply position it under or beside the patient’s head, adjust firmness with the hand pump, and begin the scan. Like all MRI Med positioning products, it’s engineered for safe, consistent use across all MRI zones and ships ready to use.
