MR Safe What does this mean?
MR Safe

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is the Orthopedic Kit approved for MRI use?

Yes. The Orthopedic Kit is constructed from non-magnetic, non-conductive materials and labeled MR Conditional under ASTM F2503 standards. It is designed for safe use in MRI Zones III and IV, including inside the scan room, at 1.5 T and 3 T field strengths. As always, verify your facility’s specific MRI operating conditions before use to ensure compliance with the labeled parameters.

2. What imaging procedures can the Orthopedic Kit be used for?

This kit is designed for orthopedic and general positioning across multiple imaging modalities — including MRI, CT, Ultrasound, and Nuclear Medicine. The included pieces, such as the oblique finger block, cervical headrest, and wedges, help technologists achieve precise anatomical alignment during joint, spine, and extremity studies, improving image clarity and reducing motion artifacts.

3. How does the Orthopedic Kit support patient comfort and stability?

Each piece is shaped to reduce pressure points and maintain stable positioning during extended scans. The head holder and wedges support natural limb and spinal alignment, while the foam density provides balanced firmness and comfort. This minimizes movement, which helps capture consistent, high-quality orthopedic images—especially in shoulder, wrist, and cervical evaluations.

4. How does the Orthopedic Kit differ from other MRI positioning kits?

Unlike general-purpose positioning sets, the Orthopedic Kit includes components specifically designed for orthopedic imaging workflows—supporting both extremity and head positioning. It provides five versatile aids that cover common orthopedic protocols without the bulk of larger kits. This makes it ideal for facilities looking to standardize orthopedic imaging setups while maintaining MRI safety and workflow efficiency.
