MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the MRI safety status of the PearlFit Roll Cushion?

The PearlFit Roll Cushion is engineered for safe use in MRI environments. It’s made entirely from non-magnetic, non-conductive materials that won’t interfere with image quality or magnetic fields. The cushion can remain in MRI Zones III and IV, including inside the bore during scanning.

2. How is the PearlFit Roll Cushion used during MRI exams?

This cushion is designed to support and stabilize patients while improving comfort during scans. It’s most often placed under the knees, arms, or ankles to maintain relaxed, natural alignment in the supine position, helping reduce motion and improve first-time image quality. Its ergonomic roll shape adapts easily to different body types and scan setups.

3. What are the dimensions and sizing options?

The standard PearlFit Roll Cushion measures 20 inches long × 7 inches in diameter, providing reliable support without affecting coil positioning. Its size fits comfortably across most MRI table widths and can be paired with other PearlFit positioning aids for comprehensive immobilization and comfort.

4. What materials are used, and how should the cushion be cleaned?

Constructed from medical-grade, non-magnetic polymers, the PearlFit Roll Cushion is designed for long-term clinical use. The sealed, smooth surface allows quick disinfection using common hospital wipes such as alcohol or quaternary-ammonium cleaners. Avoid harsh solvents or bleach. With routine care, it maintains durability, hygiene, and consistent performance over repeated use.

5. How does the PearlFit Roll Cushion differ from the PearlFit Positioning Cushion?

The Roll Cushion provides targeted, contoured support—ideal for knees or arms—while the PearlFit Positioning Cushion offers flat or broader support for shoulders, back, or sides. Both are made from the same MRI-ready, medical-grade materials and are often used together for full-body comfort and precise positioning.
