MR Conditional What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is the Positioning Kit PA-550 safe to use in the MRI room?

Yes. The PA-550 is made from non-magnetic, non-conductive materials and labeled MR Conditional following ASTM F2503 standards. It’s designed for safe use in MRI Zones III and IV, including inside the scan room at 1.5 T and 3 T. Always check your scanner’s field strength and facility conditions to confirm they match the product labeling.

2. What’s included in the Positioning Kit PA-550, and what procedures is it used for?

The kit includes 17 individual pieces, such as knee rests, coil inserts, wedges, elbow pads, and table pads, all designed to support proper patient alignment. It’s used for MRI, CT, Ultrasound, and Nuclear Medicine procedures, helping technologists achieve consistent positioning while improving patient comfort and scan accuracy.

3. How durable is the PA-550 for regular clinical use?

Each component in the PA-550 kit is engineered for long-term durability in demanding imaging environments. The medical-grade foam and resilient covers maintain shape and support even after repeated use. These materials resist tearing, compression fatigue, and chemical wear—making the kit reliable for daily use in busy MRI and multimodality imaging departments.

4. How should the positioning pads and wedges be cleaned and maintained?

The components are designed for easy cleaning and disinfection. Surfaces can be wiped down using hospital-approved disinfectants, including alcohol-based or quaternary ammonium cleaners. Avoid bleach or abrasive materials to preserve surface quality. Routine inspection for wear helps ensure continued comfort and safe performance.

5. How does the PA-550 compare to other MRI positioning kits?

The PA-550 offers one of the most comprehensive configurations in its class, with 17 pieces for full-body support and flexibility across imaging modalities. It gives technologists a single, modular system that adapts to diverse patient anatomies and scan types, improving both workflow efficiency and image consistency.
