MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

The ProFoam Plate MRI Thermal Protection Pad offers an advanced solution for maintaining patient comfort during MRI procedures. Specifically designed to provide effective thermal insulation, it prevents heat or cold transfer, ensuring a stable and comfortable surface for patients, even during prolonged imaging sessions. Constructed with durable, dimensionally-stable foam encased in a welded polyurethane cover, this thermal protection pad is both long-lasting and easy to maintain using standard hospital-grade infection control products. Its large size delivers comprehensive coverage, accommodating diverse patient needs while supporting effective care.

This essential addition to MRI equipment not only enhances procedural efficiency but also prioritizes patient safety by reducing the risk of thermal burns associated with conductor loops or gantry touchpoints. Sold as a set of two, the ProFoam Plate comes with an industry-leading two-year warranty and features high-frequency welded seams on its soft polyurethane cover, ensuring durability for years of use. Its compatibility with various MRI products underscores its value in healthcare facilities committed to delivering exceptional patient care and optimizing operational excellence.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How does the large ProFoam Plate improve patient safety in high-risk MRI contact points?

The large plate gives you wide, consistent coverage across areas where patients often rest against the bore, table edges, or conductor loops. Its stable foam core helps prevent direct skin contact with cold or conductive surfaces, which lowers the risk of MRI-related thermal injuries. Because it spans almost a meter in length, it’s especially useful for taller patients, bariatric workflows, or studies where multiple touchpoints need insulation at once.

2. Is the large ProFoam Plate durable enough for daily MRI use and routine disinfecting?

Yes. The foam is sealed inside a welded polyurethane cover designed for frequent cleaning with hospital-grade disinfectants, including solutions with up to 90% alcohol. It doesn’t absorb fluids, doesn’t deform after repeated scans, and holds up well under high patient volume. The larger plates also lie flat without curling, which helps maintain consistent spacing and reduces the need for constant repositioning.

3. When should MRI teams choose the large ProFoam Plate instead of the smaller size?

Choose the large plate when you need full-length insulation—for example, along a patient’s torso, thigh, or full arm span, or when scanning in systems with tighter coil configurations. It’s also the better option when you want one pad to cover multiple potential contact points instead of placing several smaller pads. Many departments use the large set during longer body studies, cardiac work, or cases where staying ahead of thermal risks is especially important.
