MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

The ProFoam Plate MRI Thermal Protection Pad, Small, is an essential accessory for improving both patient comfort and safety during MRI procedures. Specifically designed for use with advanced MRI equipment, this thermal protection pad provides effective insulation to minimize unnecessary contact with cold surfaces during scans. Its compact size allows for seamless integration into confined configurations, making it ideal for targeted applications. Constructed from dimensionally stable foam encased in a welded polyurethane cover, the ProFoam Plate ensures durability and long-lasting use. It forms a reliable barrier between the patient and potential touchpoints, such as conductor loops or gantries, which mitigates the risk of thermal burns frequently associated with MRI products.

Engineered to complement the precision and reliability of diagnostic workflows, the ProFoam Plate supports patient safety while aligning with rigorous infection control protocols. The pad is easy to clean and disinfect using standard hospital-grade products, including solutions with up to 90% alcohol. With a proven design that withstands the demands of regular MRI procedures, the pad is sold as a set of two and comes with an industry-leading two-year warranty. The Joint Commission has highlighted the importance of mitigating thermal burns during scans, noting that over 70% of MRI complications relate to such injuries. The ProFoam Plate addresses this critical need, offering a robust and precise solution that enhances the effectiveness of MRI processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How does the ProFoam Plate help prevent MRI thermal burns during scans?

This pad creates a stable insulating layer between the patient and any cold or conductive touchpoints in the bore—such as coil housing, cabling, or gantry surfaces. Its dimensionally stable foam helps reduce the chance of skin-to-surface contact, which is a known contributor to MRI-related thermal injuries. Techs often place the small plates near the elbows, arms, or other high-risk areas where patients tend to rest against equipment during longer studies.

2. Is the ProFoam Plate durable enough for high-volume MRI departments and daily disinfecting?

Yes. The welded polyurethane cover is built to handle frequent cleaning with hospital-grade disinfectants, including formulas with up to 90% alcohol. It doesn’t absorb fluids, doesn’t warp, and holds its shape even with repeated use. This makes it a reliable choice for busy MRI suites that need consistent thermal protection—not something that breaks down after a few weeks.

3. What are the best ways to use the small pad in tight MRI setups?

The small size works especially well when space is limited—for example, around the patient’s arms in 60 cm bore systems, inside cramped coil setups, or along narrow gantry edges. Because it’s lightweight and low-profile, you can slide it under or alongside the patient without changing their positioning. Many teams keep multiple small pads on hand to customize protection for pediatric patients, elderly patients, or anyone with bony contact points that tend to get cold or irritated during scans.
