MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

This instructional sign provides clear, step-by-step visuals and written guidance to ensure proper insertion of foam earplugs before entering Zone IV. Correct use of earplugs helps maintain effective hearing protection and patient comfort during MRI procedures.

In MRI environments, a minimum Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 29 dB is recommended to protect against high acoustic levels generated during scans. Displaying this sign in MRI environments promotes compliance with hearing safety protocols and reduces the risk of hearing discomfort or injury.

Constructed from durable, easy-to-clean materials, this sign is designed to withstand frequent cleaning and high-traffic use in clinical settings.

Key Features:

  • Clear, step-by-step instructions and visuals for proper earplug insertion
  • Supports compliance with hearing protection standards
  • Enhances patient and staff safety in high-noise MRI environments
  • Die cut with radius corners for a professional, finished appearance
  • .060 white styrene construction for strength and durability
  • Full adhesive backing with liner for secure, long-term mounting
  • Smooth, wipeable surface suitable for hospital cleaning protocols

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why do MRI facilities post a “Proper Use of Earplugs” sign near Zone IV?

Facilities use this sign to make sure patients and staff understand how to insert foam earplugs correctly before entering Zone IV, where scan noise can reach high acoustic levels. Clear, step-by-step visuals help reduce improper insertion, which improves hearing protection and keeps your suite aligned with recommended 29 dB NRR requirements for MRI environments.

2. Is this earplug instruction sign durable enough for frequent cleaning in hospitals and imaging centers?

Yes. The sign is made from .060 white styrene with a smooth, wipe-clean surface that holds up well to hospital disinfectants. It’s built for walls and prep areas that get cleaned many times a day, and the material won’t curl, warp, or lose print clarity in high-traffic clinical spaces.

3. How do you install this MRI earplug instruction sign, and does the adhesive stay put long-term?

The sign includes a full adhesive backing that bonds securely to painted walls, doors, and smooth surfaces commonly found in MRI prep zones. Once mounted, it stays in place without lifting at the edges, which is ideal for areas where patients stand to prepare before entering the scanner room.
