MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are titanium bayonet tissue forceps appropriate for use in MRI suites?

These forceps are built from non-magnetic titanium, which makes them a dependable choice for MRI departments that need tools that won’t interact with the magnetic field. They’re commonly used in Zones II and III for prep and sterile work where metal instruments are still needed but ferromagnetic risk must be avoided. Because they’re metal, they shouldn’t be placed in the bore during active scanning unless your facility has specific MR-Conditional use conditions in place. Most MRI teams choose titanium forceps because they provide stable handling and precision without introducing magnetic interference.

2. What makes the bayonet design helpful for MRI procedures or fine dissection work?

The bayonet shape keeps your hand out of the line of sight, which gives you better visibility when you’re working in tight spaces or around sensitive tissue. That’s why this design shows up often in ENT, neuro work, and any procedure that requires a clear, unobstructed view. In an MRI setting, where you often work around coils, cables, and positioning pads, the angled bayonet profile lets you reach exactly where you need to without bumping into surrounding equipment.

3. How durable is titanium for repeated sterilization and daily clinical use?

Titanium holds up extremely well under heavy use. These forceps resist corrosion, bending, and tip wear, even with regular autoclaving and standard disinfectants. Facilities that switch from stainless to titanium usually notice that the tips stay aligned longer and the grip feels more consistent over time. For MRI teams looking for long-lasting, non-magnetic instruments that handle daily cleaning cycles without degrading, titanium bayonet forceps are a solid, low-maintenance option.
