MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can these straight titanium Crile forceps be used safely in MRI environments?

These forceps are made from non-magnetic titanium, which makes them a strong fit for MRI suites that need instruments without ferromagnetic attraction. They’re commonly used in prep and interventional areas where you want dependable hemostasis while staying within MRI-appropriate materials. As with any metal tool, they shouldn’t be placed inside the bore during active scanning unless your site has defined specific MR-Conditional conditions for metal instruments. Most facilities prefer titanium because it supports MRI-centered workflows and helps avoid the risks associated with steel tools near high-field magnets.

2. What practical advantages do straight Crile forceps offer for MRI-adjacent surgical or procedural work?

The straight design gives you clean, predictable control—especially useful when clamping small vessels, maintaining visibility, or working along direct planes where angled instruments get in the way. Titanium keeps the forceps light, easy to handle, and comfortable during longer cases. For MRI settings, the combination of a straight profile and non-magnetic construction makes them reliable for routine procedural work without introducing unnecessary risk around coils, cables, or monitoring equipment.

3. How durable are titanium Crile forceps for everyday clinical use and repeated sterilization?

Titanium holds up extremely well under constant use. These forceps stay corrosion-resistant through frequent autoclave cycles and maintain good tension and hinge feel over time. Unlike stainless steel, titanium doesn’t pit or lose alignment as quickly, which means fewer replacements and more consistent performance across your surgical and MRI workflows. Many facilities choose titanium instruments specifically because they deliver long service life with very little maintenance.
