MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are these curved titanium micro scissors appropriate for use near MRI systems?

Yes. These scissors are made from non-magnetic titanium, which means they stay stable and predictable in MRI-adjacent areas. Titanium reduces the risk of magnetic pull or torque, making it a reliable choice when you need fine dissection tools that won’t behave unpredictably around imaging equipment. Many facilities use these scissors in prep zones and MRI-guided procedures where safe handling and consistent performance are essential.

2. What benefits do the curved, serrated blades provide for delicate surgical or research work?

The curved profile helps you work around tissue planes without obstructing your view, while the serrated edges provide a controlled, non-slip cut—especially helpful when you’re dissecting fine structures or working under magnification. Combined with the flat handle, which gives a steady, comfortable grip, these scissors offer precise control with minimal hand fatigue, even during extended procedures.

3. How durable are titanium micro scissors during repeated sterilization cycles and daily clinical use?

Titanium holds up extremely well in high-volume workflows. It resists corrosion, stays aligned, and keeps its cutting performance even after frequent sterilization. Unlike softer alloys or stainless tools that can warp or dull, titanium maintains its sharpness and spring tension over time. Departments that depend on reliable MRI-compatible instruments appreciate that these scissors stay consistent and reduce the need for repeated replacements.
