MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why choose straight titanium Metzenbaum scissors for MRI suites and imaging-supported procedures?

Straight Metzenbaum scissors made from titanium are a reliable choice for MRI environments because titanium is fully non-magnetic and won’t react near the magnet or coils. Facilities use them for soft-tissue work during prep or minor procedures where precision matters but safety around imaging hardware is just as important. Their shape gives you predictable, controlled cuts, which is helpful when you want accuracy without drifting into surrounding tissue.

2. What clinical tasks are straight Metzenbaum scissors best suited for?

The straight blades make these scissors ideal for clean, linear soft-tissue dissection and for trimming sutures with good visibility. They’re commonly used in general surgery, ENT, plastics, dermatology, and other specialties that rely on delicate cutting without excessive force. In MRI-adjacent procedure rooms, they’re valued because they reduce risk while still giving clinicians the fine control Metzenbaums are known for.

3. How does titanium hold up to constant sterilization and heavy rotation in high-volume hospitals or imaging centers?

Titanium performs exceptionally well in facilities that sterilize instruments multiple times a day. It resists corrosion, maintains its cutting edge, and keeps its tension over long-term use. Biomedical teams appreciate that titanium instruments don’t warp or pit the way some stainless tools can after repeated autoclave cycles. That durability makes these scissors a dependable option for MRI suites that expect consistent performance from every instrument set.
